How Does It Work?

As an irregular cornea causes light to enter the eye incorrectly, the surface must be reshaped during surgery to help make it more even, allowing light to enter properly. This restores vision and removes the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Other Types of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery is the most common form of laser eye surgery, although there are several other options available too. This includes:

LASEK – Similar to LASIK surgery but designed for patients with thin cornea. While the corneal surface is still corrected, it requires a thin layer of tissue covering the cornea (the epithelium) to be temporarily removed to one side before correcting the cornea. A microkeratome isn’t used either, with a tool known as a trephine used to create the flap instead.

PRK – One of the first forms of laser eye surgery, it is not unlike LASEK surgery, with the main difference being the epithelium is completely removed rather than partially removed. This epithelium grows back naturally over time, although the procedure is now less commonly used in favour of LASEK eye surgery.

IntraLASIK – Almost identical to LASIK surgery, with the main difference being a laser is used to create the flap rather than a microkeratome.

Eye Conditions Treated by LASIK Eye Surgery

There are a host of eye conditions that can be effectively treated with LASIK and other forms of laser eye surgery. This includes:

Myopia – Commonly known as short-sightedness, the condition makes it difficult to focus on objects from longer distances. It can make tasks that require distance vision difficult, such as driving.

A Cataract is a medical condition that slowly clouds the eyes lens, which causes blurred vision. This can ether severely reduce your vision or just cause some blurriness. An example would be looking through a fogged up windshield. This can make it hard to do daily activities like driving, playing sports and reading. Most of the time cataracts will develop slowly and you won’t notice it right away. As time goes on you might notice your vision getting weaker/blurry. You might even get some cheater glasses (readers) and this will help for a little bit. But, again time will not be on your side with cataracts.

Once your vision affects daily life, it might be time to go see an eye doctor. The good news is cataracts can be treated by a medical professional! The bad news is it won’t go away on its own and you will need surgery. This is generally a safe and effective procedure.

Cataract surgery consists of removing the clouded cataract and replacing it with a clear lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL stays permanently in your eye. Lasik Eye Surgery Over 40

Mistakes to Avoid After Laser Vision Correction

Immediately after laser vision correction surgery, your eyes will feel gritty and watery for about three or four hours. During this time, while you are conscious of your eyes, it’s easy to remember that you have just come out of surgery and you should be taking extra care of them.

You will have been told to go home and rest your eyes during this period, and you will probably have been given anesthetic eye drops to administer should you feel any discomfort.

The eyes recover quickly, however, and it becomes easy to forget that they are still in the healing stage. Once a few hours have passed your vision will be starting to improve, and you will be able to return to work within the week, if not the next day.

Even though it may feel like your eyes are fully recovered, they are still healing, so it’s important you don’t make the following mistakes during this period.

During the first 48 hours after eye surgery, you should avoid touching your face, and also avoid getting water on them so as to prevent infection.  You are at greater risk of rubbing the eyes during sleep. be sure to wear protective eyewear when sleeping or napping.

The bright light of outdoors can be painful for a few days after eye surgery so always have a quality pair of sunglasses on hand for a few weeks.

A Guide To Understanding Your Eyes

To understand the LASIK procedure it is crucial to understand your eyes.  How do we see?  What takes place within your eye to allow it to process images and give us the gift sight?  They eye is made up of several different parts, one being the cornea.  The cornea, together with the lens refracts light rays so that they focus on the retina.  The retina is a layer of light-sensing cells that line the back part of the eye.  It is the job of the retina to take the light rays and convert them into little impulses that are sent to the brain to create images. When the eye has imperfections to the shape within the eyeball itself, the cornea or the lens a refractive error will occur.  The four basic refractive errors are:

1)      Myopia:  The term that is commonly used for Myopia is nearsightedness.  This means that only objects that are close are clear.

2)      Hyperopia: The term that is commonly used for Hyperopia is farsightedness.  This means that only objects that are far are clear.

3)      Astigmatism: Astigmatism causes the images to be blurry no matter if they are close or far away.

4)      Presbyopia: The term that is commonly used for Presbyopia is aging eye.  This usually occurs to the adult population between forty and fifty making it difficult to see things that are close.  Reading glasses help.  This is a condition that cannot be treated using LASIK.

Now that you know more about the eye and the different ailments that can affect them it is time to consider if you are a candidate for LASIK.

  • LASIK can only be performed on patients over eighteen years old.  People younger than eighteen still have changing vision.  Some ophthalmologists prefer to operate on patients over twenty one.
  • Patients that are pregnant or nursing are not candidates for LASIK. Pregnancy changes some women’s vision.
  • Check out the list of medications that you cannot take if you are considering LASIK eye surgery.  Some drugs like Accutane and oral Prednisone are not to be taken if you are considering eye surgery.
  • You must have good eye health and your eye prescription should have been stable for awhile.

Precautions After Lasik Vision Correction

The Next Steps In Preparations For Lasik Eye Surgery

When it comes to Lasik eye vision correction surgery you will want to make sure that you follow the pre-surgery and post-surgical instructions you are given closely. Each part of the procedure starting with the initial consultation to the final consult is an important step in optimal vision.  Not following directions or giving full disclosure to your surgeon on your medical history could put you at risk for complications that are unnecessary.  When Lasik is performed correctly and patient directions are followed the risks associated with the procedure are decreased tenfold.

The day before the surgery is as equally important as the day or the days following the surgery. You must arrange to be driven to and from the office as well as to and from your follow up appointment.  You will want to make sure this is arrangement is confirmed the day before the operation is set to take place.  Often times Lasik patients will be given medicine that helps them relax before the appointment.  This medicine will make it impossible for you to drive yourself.  After your surgery your vision will be blurry and it is important to keep the strain off your eyes.  This is why a driver is so important the Lasik procedure. The day of surgery your eye surgeon will give you a list of requirements in order to prepare for the surgery.  It is important that they day of your surgery you do not apply any facial or body creams, lotions, make-up or perfumes.  Each and every one of these products has an associated risk of infection.  Most eye surgeons will ask that you scrub your eyelashes and surrounding area for a substantial amount of time before the surgery to remove any foreign debris and left over residue that can often be found on the lashes.

More often that now Lasik is performed in the office as an outpatient surgery.  On average the procedure is relatively fast that takes under an hour to perform.  You will be asked to sit in a reclining chair in an exam room that contains a laser system to perform the operations. Numbing drops will be placed in your eyes, the area will be cleaned once again and your eyelids will be held open with a speculum. A slit will be cut into the cornea and the laser surgery will be performed.  This part of the procedure will be different based on the level of vision correction needed as well as the individual patient.

After the surgery is finished a shield is placed over the eye for protection.  It is super important that you don’t rub or put any pressure on you eye.  The shield will protect the eye while you sleep and will keep the eye from accidentally being hit or poked until the flap is healed. You will need to abstain from eye make-up, creams, sports, swimming and other activities that are strenuous or breed bacteria.  You will also want to where the eye shield at night for a month after the procedure.  A follow up visit with the eye surgeon will be scheduled within the first twenty four hours after surgery.  They will direct you with detailed instructions on the do’s and don’ts after Lasik.  Follow them and the healing process should be easy and free of complications.
