Steps to take in the fall season

Fall is here! Can’t even believe this is being said so soon as it seems like just yesterday the kids got out of school and now summer has happened, memories have been made and school is back in session as well as the lawns being scattered with leaves. Now is the prime time to ensure the health of your lawn, trees and landscape.

The first step it to ensure the canvas is left blank and ready to go for winter and spring. This entails cutting down trees that have died or become infected with disease or pest as well as trimming branches in trees. This leaves the canvas healthy and blank for the next year. Tree removal and trimming is best left to the professionals.

Next engage your lawn with some food. The worst thing to happen is to your lawn awakening in the spring with “feed me Semour screams”. The first application of fertilizer should be done in the middle of September with the next application happening before the frost has set in, around the end of November.

It is also important to reseed areas that have incurred damage from the sun. In order to reseed successfully loosen the soil and add seed on top of the loosened soil. Then add another layer of soil to the top. This will assist in the seed taking root.

Keep watering the lawn until the frost is here to stay. The lawn should be moist as it heads into winter but not saturated. Saturating the lawn will create a perfect environment for mold growth. Don’t automatically assume since Labor Day has come and gone that our house should be put away.

Don’t prune! Pruning is meant to encourage growth and going into a season where plants, shrubs and trees are going to be dormant the last thing you should do is encourage growth. Wait to prune until spring time rolls around. Dead wood however, is better to take off in the fall so as said before tree trimming and tree removal is best to be done now. This will prevent the perfect living environment for bugs to live and hide; dead wood.

The fall season is the perfect time to transplant items within your landscape and to divide larger plants such as ferns and hostas. This helps in allowing the root system take hold for spring growth. On a side note now is the perfect time to invite friends to share their overgrown goods with your landscape.

Mulch is an important part of fall preparations. Mulching around trees ensuring that the mulch is shaped in a donut leaving room around the trunk and not like a volcano. This allows the tree to be a less likely home and meal for small critters as it is not comfy at the trunk. Mulch is also best to be applied in flower beds in the fall before the hard freeze. It will help prevent the plant root systems and ensure they are vibrant and healthy for the spring.

Add any bulbs that are required to be planted in the fall for spring growth. Tulips and daffodils are some that add great color in the spring when the landscape is just awakening and color is still bleak and unseen in the grass and trees.

Fall landscape preparations make for an easy transition in the spring. A little preparation goes a long way with your landscape and most things for that matter.

LTL Freight and LTL Carriers Explained

LTL is an acronym that stands for less than truckload. What this means to small businesses and to individuals such that have items that are heavy and overly expensive to ship via conventional methods is that even without a full truck load the items can get shipped. This is especially important for small to medium leveled companies that ship items frequently but never enough to fill an entire truck. Most often loads over one hundred pounds will be shipped in this method. A truck load fills up with a bunch of smaller shipments to form an entire load. Once the freight carrier collects the shipment they are consolidate on one freight trailer for transport to its desired locations.
Learning about LTL shipping is important to help ensure that when shipping items that don’t fill an entire truck load but are over one hundred pounds that your shipment is handled appropriately getting to the proper location. LTL shipping is not only meant for companies. Individual residential clients can also be served by LTL shippers. Consider shipping a large handmade china cabinet or toy box to grandchildren that live far away; you will need to use a shipper that handles small, heavy loads to get it where it needs to go. That is where LTL shippers come in.
The first step in shipping through a LTL carrier is to determine the weight of your freight. Freight is defined as packages over one hundred pounds. It is in your best interest to know the dimensions as well. Write down the width, height and length of the package as well as the weight. This will help when pricing different LTL shippers.
Nest you will need to find a local shipper of light loads in your area. This is most easily done by searching LTL freight carriers in Google, Bing, Yahoo or the search engine of your preference. Once you have determined local shippers that you are interested in shipping with fill in the online freight information to get an estimate price on shipping. Doing this online you will find it easier to compare between different freight carriers without the hassle of moving your freight from one carrier to another.
Once you have settled on a rate and shipper that you have decided to go with call a sales representative from the carrier. You can sign up for an account online and a rep from the company will contact you or you can contact the company directly.
When you are in contact with the sales representative from the shipping company that will ask you what the rate was that you have been quoted from the online application. The information will be taken down and confirmed. If you will need help with the freight let the carrier know that you will need a forklift. At this point the carrier representative will book and confirm a date and time that your freight will be set to ship.
The carrier will most likely send preparation guidelines on how your freight needs to be packaged for shipping. Often times a carrier will require that the shipment is secured to a pallet to help ensure for ease of movement during the shipping process. You will be able to track your freight as it moves through the process of meeting its final destination and so may the recipient so that when the shipment arrives they are able to pick it up. Remember that LTL shipping most often refers to shipping domestically. Foreign freight may need to go through a different process depending on customs and carriers.

Remodeling Over Moving

When we bought our home we did not consider the space within the home as much as we did the space outside the home. The landscape was to die for. When we look out on one side of the home there is a heavenly forest; thick with ever tree known to the Northern states and to the other was a beautiful flowing river that leads to 5 different sporting lakes. It really did not matter at the time what the inside looked like as we were purchasing the land. I am sure this has happened to many people just like us.
Now some years later, I am not saying as it ages me a great deal, the landscape is still wonderful but the desire to make the inside of the home ours has come. Instead of moving to a home that is to die with substandard views we have decided to look into home renovations.
Remodeling your home saves you money in the long run. It also saves you the hassles of moving. The structure of the home can be kept intact in most home remodels. Even if the entire layout is to be rearranged and rooms or additions added on to the general walls of the home are there.
With the space we were renovating the first issue we wanted to address is that there was not a bathroom on the first floor. With our aging bodies this was just not a feasible option to go without any longer. So the bathroom addition began on the first floor. For us this turned out to be fairly easy. We had a huge coat closet that backed to a walk in pantry. The space was “easily” turned into a full size first floor bathroom.
The next move was to include a master suite on the first floor. The first floor consisted of a dining room that to us was wasted space. We do a lot of family dinners but the weather is beautiful for most of the year allowing us to access the large screened in porch for this. The dining room along with a first floor guest room was turned into a master suite and bathroom combination that we were ecstatic to have!
With the addition of our first floor master suite we had taken away a bedroom that needed to be replaced. This was easy as the space above our garage was a perfect option for a lofty guest bedroom allowing us to turn our previous master suite into a sitting room/library. The bedroom renovations made the home feel incredibly room as we were now occupying a space in a manner we had never imagined before. The attic above the garage was wasted all those years.
One of my favorite renovations in the home has been the kitchen. We had become accustomed to a small kitchen. This was alleviated by blowing out a two outside walls in the kitchen and moving them out. With this it allowed us to accommodate the beautiful river view into the remodel. The kitchen now has large window and allow natural light and nature to be with us. We added counter top seating and overall space to entertain. The kitchen renovation really opened up the home and allowed the reason we loved the outside space to become a part of the interior.
The renovations were not always easy. As many people know being in a state of chaos is a lot. We did manage to stay sane and find respite staying with friends during parts of the renovation where walls were coming down and it was just generally too much to bare. We did manage a long two week vacation as well during the remodel which helped bring back into focus the big picture. Be sure to have little escapes planned as you embark on the home renovation project. I guarantee it will bring peace back to your life and marriage.

Maintenance Free Aluminum Fencing

If you are looking for a maintenance free fencing system for your landscape you can easily get it with the installation of aluminum fence panels. This type of fence is ideal for homeowners who love the beauty and traditional flare of wrought iron but want something maintenance free that they are not worried will rust. When homeowners are looking into aluminum fence they often are concerned that the fence will be super expensive, not as sturdy as its wrought iron counterpart and that it won’t be available in the color and size panels they desire. This article will cover those concerns for homeowners.
One of the nice things about aluminum fencing is that it is available to be purchase in several different grades. Sort of like when buying carpet, you can purchase the material in a good, better, best grade type scale. This helps homeowners keep it within the desired budget while getting a product that is long lasting and maintenance free.
Another budget benefit to think of is that with the fence being maintenance free you save money in the long run with paint, stain and replacement. Panel fencing made out of aluminum is guaranteed not to rust, warp or wear out. It is so nice to know you will never have to think about the aluminum gate and fence system once it is installed. It is basically maintenance free.
Aluminum fence is an incredibly sturdy product. With four different grade levels you can purchase our fence panels in different levels of sturdiness depending on the application and placement of the fence. When it comes to pool fencing a sturdier residential aluminum grade should be considered. Aluminum pool fencing will have to withstand small children and constant abuse as it is used on a daily basis. A lower grade fence can be used in applications where the fence is purely decorative or being used only to keep a barrier in place around the landscape. This fence will not be climbed on and tugged at as pool fencing is. Commercial grade fencing can be used in applications around the home but most of the time this is an over kill and unnecessary.
Although aluminum fence panels are able to be installed by the do it yourselfers it is relatively inexpensive when considering the cost of the fence materials to have a professional fence installation company install your homes new fence. Fence panels do come with many parts put together in a pre-assembled manner however professionals know exactly what they are doing and can provide application practices that come only with experience.
Another issue that arises when thinking about adding fencing is the attractiveness of the material and design aesthetics. Decorative aluminum fencing comes in a vast array of colors and style options. Upon selecting our fence the issue will most likely be that you have too many options available instead of not enough. Select a color and design that will grow with your home and will not easily become out dated.
On the off chance your fence is damaged aluminum panels are easy to repair and match up. Storm damage is the most common reason that fence panels would be damaged. A tree or large branch will dominate the strength of any fencing material so in a storm the fence will lose. When it comes to materials in fencing consider the value, quality and budget friendliness check out aluminum fence panels.

Dreaming Of An Inground Pool

Have you been dreaming of an inground swimming pool? Before you dive in head first here is some advice to help you in making the dream a reality.
1) Consider all the things you want in your new pool. In creating a dream list nothing is too big or too small. Find out about the newest, latest and greatest in the swimming pool industry. Contact local swimming pool builders. Let the builder look at your landscape layout and offer suggestions on material, styles and designs that will fit in items from your dream list.
2) Collect pictures of inground pool shapes, materials and features that you like. Add in different materials and styles you like in your everyday life. Professional builders will be able to incorporate all of your ideas into one better when then have a visual on elements that appeal to you.
3) Research the similarities and differences between the three types of inground pools; concrete (Gunite with Marcite overlay), fiberglass and vinyl. You will also want to look into the options available in tile, coping, cleaning systems, filters and different artistic elements that can be incorporated. Do research and be able to communicate with the pool builder in their language. You will feel so much more confident in the experience than going in blind.
4) Determine what shape you want the pool to be. You want function, aesthetics and something classic. From rectangles to kidney beans with free-form thrown in for fun, a shape is out there for your landscape. Consider where to place the hot tub and waterfalls too! If you are planning parties surrounding the pool consider a swim up bar/seating area. How much fun would that be for your guests!
5) The weather in your area can dictate some of the features you will want for your pool. If you live in a colder climate are you going to enclose the pool for year round use or close the pool at the end of the season? Consider adding a heater to the pool in areas with short swimming seasons to extend the swimming season. If you live in an area with high winds therefore an increase in tree debris a screened in enclosure would be helpful in keeping the area clean and bug free.
6) What is the pool going to be used for? Children and fun consider adding a slide and diving board, adults and entertaining consider lighting and built in water features with a negative pool edge. You will be a pool builders best client if you are prepared with your wants and desires for the area.
7) A budget will clearly be needed. In order to establish a budget that is reasonable and allows for the extra goodies you want to incorporate talk with a professional pool installation company. The information you gather will be useful in establishing the amount of funds you are willing to put aside for the extras. Is a pool worth the extra depth needed in the pool as well as the cost of the slide?
There are so many different concerns in pool ownership that need to be remembered before the ground is dug. Things such as long term cost and maintenance does it increase your home’s value, local building codes, extra homeowners insurance and the costs associate with it, being energy efficient as well as eco-friendly and green and safety elements such as aluminum pool fencing. Trimming your trees

Trimming trees is a mess most people would prefer not to have to deal with. Leaving dead tree branches on a tree however makes the tree aesthetically unpleasing and a hazard to your home and yard environment. The best time to take note of tree limbs that are ready to be trimmed is near the end of the summer season right before the leaves drop. It is easier to note dead limbs while the leaves are still intact on the living limbs. Mark the limbs and after the foliage has dropped it will be easier to maneuver in and around the tree to cut the dead limbs.
There are a few reasons you may want to trim limbs and branches that are still alive. If you note that a limb is diseased, crossing over another limb, rubbing on other branches, growing inward or over a structure the limb should most likely be removed. It sounds simple enough to cut the branches off of the tree however there is a right way and a wrong way to prune trees. A tree will recover quickly when trimmed in the correct manner however cut the limbs incorrectly and you may be creating a snowball effect of negative consequences.
Below I will present you with the proper way to cut tree limbs to ensure the health of the tree is not disturbed during the process.
The first step is to make sure you don’t cut the branch close to the trunk. Make sure the first cut on the branch is done one to two feet from the trunk and make sure to begin the cut from the underside of the limb only about a third of the way through the branch.
Next you will want to make a second cut on the outside of where the initial cut was made. This cut can be made all the way through the branch. It will break away as you saw the limb, since the initial cut was made this will allow the branch to fall off without tearing any of the trees bark away. If the bark were to tear off the tree it would make the area that is left exposed susceptible to disease and would leave an access entry way for bugs and tree pests.
The final cutting process is done by cutting the bit of limb that is left where the branch meets the trunk. This area will heal and “scab” over with new bark in the shape of a donut. This is how you know the tree is properly healing.
As previously mentioned the best time to remove limbs is after the leaves have fallen. The cooler weather that is present in the fall and winter months kills off diseases that are more prevalent in the summer months. Some trees, when cut, will ooze. This is unsightly and looks as if great harm is being caused to the tree however this is not true. The ooze is most common in beech, birch, elm, maple and yellowwood. Covering the wound with tree paint or other liquid sold as treatment in unnecessary. Trees can adapt to this condition and heal just fine if left alone and untreated.
Tree trimming and pruning limbs greatly improves the look and health of the trees and landscape. Don’t take shortcuts when trimming trees as larger problems can ensue if not done properly. If you are unsure of exactly what you should do even after reading this look into hiring a local tree removal contractor. They are equipped with everything to make trimming trees simple.

Your Roof’s Enemies

Your home is your fortress. The first layer of protection on any fortress is the roof and siding materials. It is the first layer enemies have to penetrate before damaging the structural materials holding the home together. Many people don’t recognize the enemies that the home’s outside layer are forced to protect against day in and day out. When it comes to protecting your home and roofing material it is important to know what types of opponents it will be facing.

Depending on the elements in which your fortress is built you will face varying obstacles when it comes to your roof. The performance of the roofing material is affected by many factors and choosing the right material for your climate is crucial for the roof to perform well for you.
o Sun: The sun is an enormous enemy of you your roof. The rays of the sun cause roofing material to deteriorate at a faster pass when exposed directly to them. This is the number one reason that asphalt shingling is rarely seen in climates where the sunny season is the majority of the year.
o Rain/Condensation: Moisture can wreak havoc underneath shingles and cedar shakes. Water can also work underneath the barriers used to install a new roof, if not properly installed, and cause damage to the roof deck and cause structural damage as well. When performing your yearly home maintenance check be sure to look for signs of moisture in the attic around the roofing beams so that water issues can be immediately taken care of at the roofing level.
o Wind: Another of Mother Nature’s evil elements from the view of your roof. Wind damage can occur when high winds lift shingles leaving a void or damage shingles peeling at the corners. Once the roofing material is damaged form the wind, the roof is more susceptible to water, debris and extensive damage to the roof.
o Snow and ice: Winter weather is another major issue when it comes to keeping your roof intact. If your home is located in a winter weather climate it is important that you prevent ice dams from building up at the edge of the roof. Roof dams prevent proper drainage and can cause the water to seep underneath the roofing material. This can cause issues with the material on the roof, the gutters and downspouts.
o Moss and algae: Moss is an issue from any home without adequate light to allow the roofing material to thoroughly dry. It is a catch twenty two, too much sun and your roof deteriorates, too much and you get algae. Both moss and algae can cause your homes roof to rot and deteriorate faster than it should. More than anything the growth is unsightly and a nuisance to remove. If you choose to have the substance removed hire a professional roof cleaning company. It is a delicate process. Then prevent the moss from reappearing by trimming trees that shade the roof and make sure the roof has proper drainage.
Your roof takes a beating as the first layer of protection for the homes structure. It is important as homeowners we do our best to take care of issues as soon as they begin rather than waiting until a problem exists. If you are aware of outside elements that are beating up your roof you will be able to keep an eye out for damage and fix it right away, prevent issues from accumulating. New roofs are expensive, roof repairs aren’t and will increase the lifetime of your roof.

Bringing A Homeowners Kitchen Into The Twenty First Century

Every homeowner has a preference in how they want their home and space to function and flow. This is true in every room in a home especially the kitchen and bathroom spaces. Every year you will notice that there are trends and fads that are incorporated into remodels and new construction that update spaces and give a fresh look and feel to the space. It also dates your home without trying.
I don’t consider a kitchen and bathroom space having the look and feel of a certain time or era as a bad thing. To be honest this is what makes a home unique. Yes, there are times when it looks plain out dated but can easily be updated adding a few minor tweaks to the space and an entire overhaul or room renovation is not needed.
A home I recently went into was very much reminiscent of an older eighties style kitchen. The yellow coloring, oak cabinets, laminate counters and linoleum flooring. Dead give a ways to a space that had seen its hay day. The couple grappled with many decisions. The cabinets were in great shape, the function of the kitchen layout was perfect and everything was still in incredible shape. The space needed minor updates however not every aspect of this eighties kitchen needed to be removed.
The solution was to add in some changes from trends that are up and coming this year. Trends in cabinetry are on two opposite spectrums wither bright white or dark finishes. The couple really liked the idea of a dark finish especially since the linoleum countertop was lighter and was not going to be replaced. We decided to go with a cherry/black finish and add a super glossy glaze. This is an incredibly up to date look for cabinetry. We replaced the eighties gold handles with some super sleek dark satin stainless steel cabinet hardware and installed a new touch activated faucet.
Another element that we added to update the cabinetry is to remove the center of the cabinet door and replace it with glass. Using glass elements in kitchens adds a modern element and really makes the space updated. The cabinets that had their small middle sections replaced with glass were then filled with pieces that were used often and pretty enough that they needed to be visible. We also added glass elements in the form of vases filled with stones. This couple collected rocks from their adventures and they were currently stored away. This gave the couple a place to display their finds while bringing in an element of nature.
The flooring is where the couple decided to spend their renovation funds. The linoleum flooring dated the space in an unbelievable way, the material, the pattern and the colors all reminiscent of the eighties. For this couple ceramic flooring was the look and feel they were interested in. They choose a rustic slate tile in twelve by twelve squares. The larger tiles looked great in their space as the dining room and kitchen were blended into one space as many eighties kitchens were designed.
These few upgrades really brought this couples eighties kitchen into the twenty first century. The space did not need a complete renovation as the space functioned perfectly with the current layout. Thankfully this space had good bones to begin with making this update a whole lot simpler.
