Novel Glaucoma Treatment Discovered

A new therapeutic method to treat glaucoma has recently been unveiled by Indiana University School of Medicine researchers. 

Glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease stemming from a damaged optic nerve, causes vision loss and blindness. In the United States, over 200,000 people suffer from glaucoma yearly, though there is no cure. 

The newly-published study was released in Communications Biology and outlined how researchers used neurons found in mitochondria as a steady source of energy, restoring homeostasis in the diseased neurons to protect the optic nerve cells. 

Arupratan Das, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and the principal investigator of the study said, “Age-related neurodegenerative disease, which includes glaucoma, Parkinson’s disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is the biggest global health problem. The fundamental mechanisms that we discovered can be used to protect neurons in glaucoma and be tested for other diseases. We have identified a critical step of the complex mitochondrial homeostasis process, which rejuvenates the dying neuron, similar to giving a lifeline to a dying person.”

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) from patients with and without glaucoma were used in the study, as well as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR), which engineered human embryonic stem cells with glaucoma mutation. 

Researchers identified glaucomatous retinal ganglion cells suffering from mitochondrial deficiency (which leads to damage and degeneration) using Stem Cell Differentiated Retinal Ganglion Cells (hRGCs) of the optic nerve, electron microscopy, and metabolic analysis. Mitochondria are the tube-like structures in cells that produce adenosine triphosphate, the cell’s energy source. 

A pharmacological agent could reverse the process, which could enhance mitochondrial biogenesis. Researchers showed retinal ganglion cells as highly efficient in degrading negative mitochondria, producing more to regain homeostasis.

Das said, “Finding that retinal ganglion cells with glaucoma produce more adenosine triphosphate even with less mitochondria was astonishing. However, when triggered to produce more mitochondria, the adenosine triphosphate production load was distributed among more mitochondrion which restored the organelle physiology. It is similar to a situation where a heavy stone is carried by fewer people versus a greater number of people – each person will have less pain and injury, just like each mitochondrion will have less difficulty and damage.”

Types of Construction Bonds

The industry offers a large variety of surety bonds, which are required to bid or work on all public works projects, private construction, remodeling, and new construction.

The different types of surety bonds include bid bonds, performance (contract) bonds, and payment bonds. These bonds offer protection for the project owner, taxpayers, investors, etc., associated with private projects. Typically, projects need all three bonds.

Bid Bonds
These bonds guarantee that the contractor will accept a job if they win the bid. They are required by federal law on all projects over $100,000. State-sponsored public work projects also usually require bid bonds. If the winning contractor decides not to accept the job, the project owner is able to submit a claim to cover costs linked to evaluating new contractor bonds. 

Performance Bonds
Sometimes called contract bonds, they guarantee that the contractor will fulfill the entire project, abiding by laws and industry standards. If they fail to do so, the project owner can file a claim to recover any financial loss resulting from another contractor re-doing the work. 

Payment Bonds
These bonds guarantee that the contractor will pay if the work is not completed in accordance with the terms of the contract by the workers, subcontractors, or suppliers. A claim by any of the aforementioned parties can result if the contractor fails to remit payment. 

Contractor License Bonds
The only type of construction bond that is not project-specific; they don’t apply to a single project. These bonds guarantee that the contractor will conduct business in a lawful and ethical manner, meeting industry standards. Some states require all contractors to be licensed at the state level to operate legally. 

In terms of cost, the contractor usually pays only a small percentage of the required bond amount established by the project owner or licensing authority. A surety bond company establishes a premium rate for each applicant based on their personal credit score, industry experience, and personal/business financial statements. Those in good standing usually pay one- to three percent of the total bond amount as an annual premium.

Connecting a rain barrel to a downspout does involve some planning but usually includes a simple tube. Some rain gardens are equipped with a filtration system and trenching as well.

Flood Electrical Safety Tips

Floods typically cause a range of issues, such as electrical failure, fires, property loss, injury, and even death. Electrical safety hazards resulting from floods are nothing to mess with, so it is important to know how to protect yourself and your loved ones during these emergencies. 

When flooding occurs, perform the following steps: 

  • Do NOT turn off the breaker box power if you are standing on a wet floor
  • Use a dry stick or rubber utensil to turn the breaker box off
  • Do NOT step into a flooded area that contains electrical outlets, appliances, or cords
  • Avoid all electrical devices, wires, switches, and fuses when wet
  • Do NOT use anything electrical that has been exposed to water
  • Stay at least 10 feet away from downed power lines and contact the electrical utility provider ASAP

To prevent electrical fires in your home, take the following actions: 

  • Plug appliances into a wall outlet instead of power strips, which might cause overheating
  • Never use generators in wet conditions
  • Ensure light bulbs meet requirements printed on the appliance and are not too powerful
  • Use Ground-Fault Circuit Interpreters (GFCIs) to protect yourself against shock hazards in areas where water might come in contact with outlets, such as kitchens and bathrooms

When flooding occurs, never enter a building by yourself. Flooded buildings are risky, dark, slippery, and potentially full of electrical voltage. If you can access the electrical meter, removing it is a good idea to avoid electrocution. Consider all outlets and switches to be decommissioned until a licensed electrician can analyze the situation.

U.S. Congress Eyes TikTok Ban

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew faces skeptical Washington lawmakers pertaining to the company’s ties to the Chinese government. Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok is under serious pressure as government officials in Washington, the United Kingdom, and Canada was forced to delete the application from their smartphones and tablets.

In the United States, President Joe Biden’s administration has set an ultimatum to TikTok saying they either forgo Chinese ownership or face a complete ban. 

The United States government has never banned a media company, let alone delete 150 million monthly users and the most viewed source of online entertainment following Netflix. 

According to Chew, “TikTok has never shared, or received a request to share, U.S. user data with the Chinese government. Nor would TikTok honor such a request if one were ever made.” 

Several pieces of legislation – including a White House-backed bill – suggests a ban is imminent. 

Cathy McMorris Rodgers, chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee said, “Americans deserve to know the extent to which their privacy is jeopardized, and their data is manipulated by ByteDance-owned TikTok’s relationship with China. What’s worse, we know Big Tech companies, like TikTok, use harmful algorithms to exploit children for profit and expose them to dangerous content online.” 

As teachers, teenagers, influencers, and business owners rallied at the U.S. Capitol to express their opposition to the ban, TikTok has been promoting their solution, dubbed “Project Texas.” The project is aimed at satisfying national security concerns and ensuring United States data will be run by a U.S. division. TikTok has already spent $1.5 billion on the project, hiring 1,500 staff to start. 

Despite these security concerns and a looming U.S. government ban, three in four marketers anticipate increasing spending over the next 12 months. The TikTok-committed marketing industry is fairly confident a ban would not happen, but a ban could force other social media companies such as Meta, YouTube, and Snap into the limelight.

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s almost time to tend to your garden. There are many varieties of mulch; how do you choose what’s best for your garden? Which is best for minimizing weeds versus enhancing beds? Keep reading to discover the answers you are looking for. 

First things first; what is mulch, exactly? Mulch is any organic material used as a top dressing on garden beds. Some options include compost mulch, bark mulch, sawdust, shredded leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, straw, hay, etc. 

Why do gardeners use mulch, anyway? During the growing season, mulch deters weed growth, keeps moisture in the soil, and helps to maintain healthy soil temperatures. 

When should mulch be applied? Mulch can be used any time of year, but the best time is mid-spring, just as the soil warms. 

What are the different types of mulch? There are a variety of mulch materials, which consist of: 

  • Compost mulch: made from organic material, best in vegetable gardens, flower, and shrub beds.
  • Bark mulch: shredded tree bark for top dressing, mainly around trees and shrubs.
  • Sawdust mulch: milling lumber debris for vegetable/fruit gardens, flower beds, and pathways. 
  • Shredded leaf mulch: chopped leaves is extremely inexpensive as they can be found in your yard.
  • Pine needle mulch: fallen needles from pine trees work well in pathways or rose beds.
  • Grass clipping mulch: another inexpensive mulch, this is simply yard clippings collected after mowing and used for vegetables, berries, and flowers. 
  • Straw or hay mulch: inexpensive, use around strawberries and other small fruits.

** Many of these mulch types can be found in your lawn. Make sure you do not use anything from sprayed/treated lawns in edible gardens, as it is severely toxic to your health. **

Why use mulch in my garden? Mulch can introduce new flora into your garden as they decompose, which is beneficial for growth. Mulch also discourages weeds and garden pests, minimizes watering time, safeguards soil moisture, adds texture and color, improves topsoil, and adds a layer of protection against severe weather. 

How do I apply mulch to my garden? Before youlay mulch, ensure the area is already weeded. Soak the ground with water and use a barrier such as newspaper or specialized fabric to control weeds before applying mulch. Then, place a thick layer, about two- to four inches, to discourage new weed growth. Covering existing weeds with mulch will not eradicate them.

2023 Power Sector Trends

Power systems in 2023 are anticipating three main challenges, according to Arne Olson, senior partner at Energy and Environmental Economics: 

  1. Extreme weather conditions – heat waves, wildfires, and storms can cause severe damage
  2. Phasing out fossil fuels – coal, natural gas, petroleum, etc.  
  3. Supply chain – delays the development of new resources

Utilities and lawmakers are tediously trying to battle these challenges by updating load forecasts based on weather patterns and more. 

EV sales almost doubled in 2022 and could double again in 2023 as billions in federal incentives hit the market. Thanks to the Biden-Harris Electric Vehicle Charging Action Plan, EV infrastructure was boosted by $7.5 billion to implement a national network of 500,000 vehicle chargers. 

Throughout 2022, the solar industry saw reduced growth because of ongoing global supply chain disruptions and the enactment of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Solar Company Hanwha Q Cells announced in early 2023 it will commit $2.5 billion to develop its solar production in Georgia. 

The hydrogen industry saw immense growth in 2022, much due to the 2021 Department of Energy’s bipartisan infrastructure law, which injected $8 billion into the hydrogen clean energy program. This was closely followed by the Inflation Reduction Act, which offered novel tax credits for low-carbon hydrogen production. 

Energy storage is slated to produce massive growth in 2023 as governments expand their carbon reduction goals. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind and solar are in high demand as developers and power plant owners look to increase utility-scale battery storage capacity by four times in the next three years.

Generator Operation Safety

Do you have a backup power plan when the electrical grid goes down? Generators are an excellent option for supplying you and your loved ones with power; however, these powerful machines can be deadly. Whether you’re new to using a generator or well-versed, keeping a few things in mind to operate them safely is vital.  

Kevin Cole, the senior associate engineer for Generac, said, “The single biggest thing you can do to run a generator safely is plan how to use your generator before you need it.” 

Generators can be portable or standby, the latter meaning that they are permanently hooked up to your property. Home standby generators immediately turn on once power is lost. Both generators have five parts: an internal combustion engine, alternator, starter, fuel tank, and outlets. 

Before you decide on a generator, consider the following: 

Electrical Load: Ensure the generator you choose can safely handle the power capacity you need and then some. If you lowball the power capacity, it will only power some electronics with insufficient voltage. Think of a utility “brown out,” which can damage many electronic devices. 

Transfer Switch: With portable generators comes a manual transfer switch, which connects by a thick, heavy-duty cable, or “genset cord,” plugged into an outdoor outlet. Transfer switches help to isolate circuits needing power, separates the house from the grid, prevent back-feeding electricity, and helps to avoid electrical fires. 

GFCI Safety: The National Electrical Code (NEC) demands that dual-voltage (120V and 240V) generators have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets. GFCI generators need a transfer switch, also required by the NEC. 

Correct Cord: If you don’t have a transfer switch installed, you can safely operate appliances while directly plugged into the generator. Refrigerators, power tools, televisions, etc., can run through long-distance extension cords. Make sure the line is thick and rated for exterior use. 

Ground Rod: If you plug a heavy-duty extension cord into the generator, do not connect the generator to a ground rod. However, ground rods should be used when powering circuits through a transfer switch. 

Location: Never, under any circumstances, operate a generator in a garage, utility building, basement, or shed. Even with open doors or windows, carbon monoxide can collect and become deadly. It has no scent and is virtually invisible to human detection. Always point a generator’s exhaust away from the house.
